The Granary cottage is set high on the banks of the river Forth overlooking the historic Fords of Frew. As the name suggests, the building was once a grain store, and when active contained its own thrashing mill. The Granary is actually built on the site of the original farmhouse which dates back to the early 18th century. Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have slept there.
Our superb self-catering conversion has inherited many of the features and character of this very old building. We have retained the sandstone outer walls (almost 3 ft thick in places) with their small traditional windows. An arched open doorway at the gable end has been replaced by two large French Doors which open out onto a patio area.
Inside the building, the single span roof was originally designed to provide a large floor area, (uninterrupted by uprights), which served as a place to spread the grain and allow it to dry thoroughly. This large space has been echoed in the living area of the accommodation.
